It Still gets Better

Sunday promised and brought rain to the dry coastal hamlets, and relief to the bush firefighters, and………… the “Husky Triatholon”.

The whole village was booked out, the streets were roped off to accommodate the events, the organisation & volunteers were magnificent, the hype was everywhere, and we were here. The 3 divisions were “elite” – 5km swim/ 86km ride/ 20km run, “sprint” – 2/ 40/ 5, “enticer” – .75/ 10/ 2, and were run one after the other with age & gender groupings starting the swim in intervals. All legs were out and back, giving the huge spectator crowd lots to see near the start finish line, which was also the “changeover station”.

And on top of that, the run leg went past our van on the hill of the CP, so we could watch from the cover of the van when the rain got heavy. It was exhausting, so we took a break at the Husky Pub overlooking the bay for flathead tails, chips and salad………..OK and a glass of wine to celebrate the competitors endeavours.

I must confess that I downloaded the fun-run and triathalon programs for Melbourne in 2014 that night, and went for my 6km run the following morning! Monday was very rainy, so we spent the morning shopping and coffeeing, then the afternoon in the Lady Denham heritage centre which consumed us until closing at 4pm.

We left Husky today and have a new camp for a week at Gerroa, south of Kiama. The sun finally broke through around lunchtime, so we spent the afternoon seeing the coastal highlights of this part of the NSW south coast………….the Kiama lighthouse and blowhole in all their glory, the little blowhole outdoing them both in the huge swells, the lookout over Werri Beach considered one of the best coastal outlooks in Aus, and a long walk on 7 mile beach before “happy hour” and Teriaki salmon for dinner. I have just finished my “cheese & bics” and will now attempt to “post” this for my OMNI mates

  1. Happy Birthday Barry – we thought about you on the ride today and bet you would have preferred to be here in the dull, cold & wet – no salmon & wine, just water coffee & cake 😦
    – beat my record today …2 punctures! I swear I got to find some kevlar tyres. Cheers 🙂
